Should I cancel my ZSEV order because of rising energy costs?

Our main gas storage facility was the repurposed Rough gas field which had been depleted. It was taken out of commission because it was leaking. The pipes drilled down into the original gas field had seals which were beyond their working life and were failing. It was a commercial decision at the time because gas was freely available and other storage was becoming available. The Humbly Grove Oil field in Hampshire for one.

We have been piping gas to Europe since May. Gas normally received via pipes to UK has been diverted by Norway too. We have been receiving LNG tankers from the US, Qatar, Peru and elsewhere day after day to support Europe and defeat Russia. It has been arriving in Milford Haven where it has been regassified and transmitted as gas and electricity. Something like the equivalent of 15-18 GW of power has been transferred almost continuously which is why European gas storage is well above the levels expected. It is, in my mind, vital that Europe does not give in to Putin and supports Ukraine. It will not be enough to end the war by negotiation in my mind, Europe will just suffer more of the same bullying, sadly it must end with regime change and a Russia which works for all its citizens.
I worked at a LNG storage facility for 20 years at Avonmouth we actually liquified and regassified and filled tankers to supply remote parts of the uk.
Other European countries have much larger gas storage capacity than the uk because we shut all ours down and now we’re reliant on other countries to supply gas which is worrying on two fronts cost and availability to supply.
The big LNG ships will go to the highest bidder a ship can be sailing to the uk and if Germany offer more for its cargo it will just turn around and go there and who suffers us the consumer so many people are going to suffer this winter and it all comes down to money not wanting to pay for storage and selling our own gas for profit this situation was always going to bite us back on day.

You’re assuming that petrol prices won’t go sky high again ? as well
The refinement of crude oil into petrol and diesel (amongst numerous other things) uses a lot of energy, so therefore with a massive hike in electric and gas prices the cost of petrol and diesel will go up proportionately.

Soo the plot thickens...Atleast here in Denmark.

One of the larger EV charge network companies, called Clever just sent an e-mail that effective October first their prices will be as follows.

Chargers from 0-99 KWh £1,03
Chargers from 100 and up £1,15

With prices like that, it will be VERY uneconomical to drive an EV here, and charging from home is not really an option either as electricity prices are almost constantly above £0.60 now.

There are a few operators with lower prices, but i suspect now the first company has raised prices, the rest is going to follow.

I am beginning to think i will maybe get my EV a bit earlier that first advertised, i would imagine the cancellations of cars will begin pouring in, if this is the new price of electricity.

At these prices, compared to diesel right now, it would be a LOT cheaper to drive a diesel than an EV, when looking at the price per mile calculation

Good grief! That's horrendous. I've run mine down to 50% charged & it's staying in the garage being used just used once every 10 days or so from now on to cut down on the bills. I'm retired so no commute. I've adjusted my habits & I'm using bus & train using my free concessionary old pharts travel pass from now on. Reading today that we're going to be in for 18% inflation in the new year.

when home costs were around 15p/kWh rapids were around 60p - so with the new home cost to be around 60p that would make £2.40/kWh! adding 50kWh = £120! for around 200miles or so of juice...

Anyone know if you can rig up an exercise bike to the bugger?? Would be cheaper to hire Bradley Wiggins!!

Great idea! Rapids have always been expensive but they will, I’m afraid take a turn for the worse. It’s turning into an expensive cost per mile unless you have a cheaper rate contract or access to any free fast chargers. Add in the fact that an EV is already expensive to buy and it will certainly slow down sales I think.

Maybe mount a pedal driven generator on the front and back passenger seats, and have the family pedalling away to make electrons to put into the battery :)

To be honest, right now i am 11 months away from delivery of my MG ZS EV, and i expect that if this situation does not get any better, i will have the car a LOT sooner, as a lot of people will cancel their orders.

Also the local "newspaper" website announced that the price of heating will go up, by december first, so that it will then cost three times what it cost back in January.

Right now i feel really happy, i invested in some insulating of our home, cutting the yearly heating use in half, and installed solar panels that will take the edge of the price of electricity for 9 months a year. Also the house has been paid out, so no loan payment.

But still, i would imagine that a younger family, that just bought an older house with maybe not so good insulation, would be pretty strung out, with everything rising in price this much.

I bet there will be a lot of cheap houses for sale in the next few years, when people default on their debt.

I agree with most , if not all of that.

It is crying shame, but I believe the help for Covid will look like a sticking plaster compared to what is to come!

Gonna be worse than the 80’s / early 90’s this oncoming recession. IMHO.

Yeah here in Denmark our socialist government refuses to reduce the government charge and VAT on heating and electricity.

Instead they hand out checks to their core voters. "Poor people". Last week they handed out checks to people that were inside some parameters for people in need. Sadly they had not done their homework so loads of people that were not to have checks got them, including people living at a drug rehab center.....That promptly took the £700 and bought drugs for them.

Why they decide to make a silly system that needs to be handled by loads of expensive employees when they could just lower the charges and VAT is beyond me, but sadly this is what they choose every single time.

To be honest i think they do it to avoid also letting "Rich" people get off a little easier, as their voters do not like it when this happens :)

And yes, i agree, it will probably be worse than the 80/90 recession....But, sorry to say, it will be a good opportunity for those with money, to invest.

We have a house that we own, it is also just paid out, so we are probably going to buy another, when the housing market crash.

Nowt wrong with that in a capitalist society
